chicago — During Easter weekend 1967 Martin Luther King was to walk down State Street to lead a march. I arrived too late to photograph him. In 1968, after he was assassinated, from the windows of the office where I was working, on the western edge of downtown, we could see the West Side ablaze. [In Chicago, more than 48 hours of rioting left 11 Chicago citizens dead, 48 wounded by police gunfire, 90 policemen injured, and 2,150 people arrested. Two miles of Austin on West Madison Street were left in a state of rubble.]

chicago — During a march led by Rev. Jesse Jackson on State Street, the Nazi party members led a counter demonstration on the sidewalks. Not for long, for they were dispersed by the police.
